Charlemagne Facts
Charlemagne was born in 742 AD and died in 814 AD on January 28. Another interesting fact about him was that his height is only 7 times his shoe size. Also, Charlemagne was crowned emperor by the Pope in 800 AD and was emperor until he died.
His Impact on the Time Period
I believe that Charlemagne had a positive impact on the time period. My reasoning for this is that he was able to spread Christianity to other countries and convert them so everyone was the same religion. Also, he unified parts of Europe when he was ruler. Lastly, Charlemagne improved education, made trade routes, and reconstructed the remains of roman cities so he could create new ones. Over all, he had a very positive effect on Rome.
Medieval Castles
The main purpose of a castle in Medieval times was to protect the people inside or as a fort in war. one way they did this was by having a large body of water surrounding the castle (the moat) so invaders from the outside had a difficult time attempting to reach the castle. Also, the castles would have arches without glass or a form of protection at the top of the castle where knights can attack invaders from above without being injured. Another way they brought protection was that most castles had very large stone walls surrounding the entire castle so attackers would have to figure out a way to climb over them, which could probably not be done because of the height of the walls.
Vikings in the Middle Ages
Impact on Feudalism
The Vikings impact on feudalism was very important. In the system of feudalism, the king owns the whole land its self and the nobles own portions of the land. The Vikings come in because they are trying to invade the land or take over. Since they are trying to attack, the nobles hire knights to protect the land in exchange for owning their own portion. Then the knights hire peasants to giver resources in exchange for renting land. Without the Vikings, half of the system would be incomplete or different than it was.
