LEGION~III
Geography of Rome
Advantages and Disadvantages
In ancient Rome, there were many advantages and disadvantages that came along with the physical features. One advantage of the geography of Rome is that the Alps and Apennine Mountains protected them from invaders, in other words, the mountains made city walls. Also, the Tiber River provided the near cities with a water source, food source, and trade source. Another advantage is the Mediterranean Sea. This feature gave the cities a water source, a way to travel to other areas, and also another trade route. Even though these physical features did many great things for the development of rome, they did come with disadvantages. For example, the Mediterranean Sea would bring in high tides and destroy crops, livestock, and part of the cities. Also, the Tiber River would flood and would cause the same things to happen. Another disadvantage is that the mountains made travel very hard and isolated the cities from each other. The geography impacted the early Romans because it could either make or break their civilization. Rivers could help them or destroy them. If the rivers flooded, they would have no crops,no livestock. This would put the city in danger and force them to trade. The mountains protected them, but all of the civilizations were very different because of the isolation. This caused many cultural differences.
Rome's First King 753 B.C.
Romulus wanted his new city, Rome, to be on Palatine Hill because it was close to the Tiber River. The Tiber River would have several advantages and disadvantages for the city. For example, the river has a food source, water source, travel and trade routes. This would help the city because they would not have to do has much trading, and when they had to, they would have a surplus of resources to trade. A disadvantage could be the river flooding. If the river flooded, the livestock could possibly die, parts of the city could be wiped out, and crops would be destroyed. This would cause the city to have to regain all of the resources lost, get new livestock, and regrow all of the crops.a river flooding is a major setback for a city.
