My City-State
|
Democracy vs. Monarchy |
I have recently settled in ancient Greece and created my own city-state. The name of my city is επιτυχημένη πόλη (successful city) in Greek and the form of government I have chosen is a Democracy. I have chosen this form of government because I believe the people have the right to have a say on what occurs in their city-state. Also, I believe a Democracy gives the citizens lifestyle with more freedom and less punishments. For example, in a Tyranny, the people do not have say in anything and are given very harsh punishments. I would want my people to live a fair life and be able to vote for what they believe should happen in επιτυχημένη πόλη.

Greek Democracy was a radical departure from Monarchy in several ways. One being the fact that the citizens were allowed vote on what happens within their city-state and government rather than having someone make decisions for them. Another major difference is that a Monarchy has a king or queen as a ruler and makes all of the decisions for the city-state. Also, the thrown in a Monarchy was passed down or selected while in a Democracy, a new leader was elected by vote. This was such a radical change in ancient Greece because this a very new concept and only one of the city-states had this form of government. Democracy was also very far from the traditional way of ruling in ancient Greece, many city-states had a, Monarchy, Tyranny, Oligarchy, etc. Democracy was very different from all of different governments because you had the right to vote for laws and rulers.

How the Creation of Democracy Influenced Modern Day Governments
Ancient Greek democracy had a deep influence on the design of governments in the modern day world. In ancient Greece, Democracy was a representative Democracy where any male over the age of 18 was able to vote to elect a representative for the government. It was considered chaos in the hands of rabble during ancient times. Whereas today, Democracy is universally positive idea and all citizens over the age of 18, male or female, can vote. Today's Democracy has several differences between the first Democracy, but ancient Democracy's did in fact influence modern government. For example, the concept of voting has stayed the same along with the concept of having more rights.
